Source: NSF Higher Education R&D (HERD) survey microdata, FY2020–24, joined to IPEDS by UNITID plus a hand-checked crosswalk for the 34 HERD reporters with no or outdated IPEDS IDs (Johns Hopkins, Ohio State, Maryland, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and others); every link was checked against Carnegie's FY2021–23 figures. Where one HERD report covers campuses Carnegie designates separately, it's shown as one combined institution, never split. Research institutions without IPEDS records are included but left out of peer benchmarks. Private for-profit institutions are excluded. "Federal R&D by agency" is federally financed expenditures split by funding agency; "by field" is total R&D (all sources) by field of science.
